Presentation and structure

Objectives

The general objective of the unit is the study of fundamental aspects of soil surface/lower atmosphere interface and of the processes of soil evolution, whether natural or related to soil management. Simultaneously the unit pursues the development of basic areas of knowledge and its application to land use, and agricultural and forestry production systems, providing information as regards most suitable and efficient management systems of soil and water resources.

Research work is organised in 4 Research Areas
1. Microclimate and Soil Processes (MICROS)

2. Soil Processes in Space and Time: Evolution, Behaviour and Remediation (PROSOIL)
3. Water management sustainable productivity of sugar beet and eucalyptus (WATERMAN)
4. Soil management and sustainability of forestry and agroforestry systems (SUSTAINFOR)

Structure

The Centro de Pedologia (CP) is located within the Department of Environmental Sciences
(Departamento de Ciências do Ambiente - DCA) of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA)

The CP has 19 members, and 14 of them have PhD degree. Six members of the CP are in the  University of Évora (EU), Escola Superior Agrária de Santarém (ESAS) and Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra (ESAC). The CP has also relationships, through projects and/or advanced training, with the University of Trás-os-Montes (UTAD), Escola Superior Agrária de Bragança (ESAB), Escola Superior Agrária de Beja (ESABe), University of Aveiro and University of Azores.

CP members maintain collaboration with researchers of other Research Centres of the ISA, namely with the Centre for Forestry Studies. CP members participate in projects with members of other institutions of the Lisbon Technical University (Laboratory of Mineralogy and Petrology of the Department of Mining Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico). Particular relief is to be given to the collaboration with the Centre for Pedological Studies (CEP) of the "Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical" (IICT), as regards sharing of space and equipment and joint participation in projects as well as scientific guidance provided to members of that Centre. CP members also participate in projects with researchers of the INIA (Ministry of Agriculture), and the Mining Geological Institute, as well as with those of private companies (Störa Celbi, SA., ADP-Adubos Portugal, Instituto de Investigação da Floresta e do Papel-RAIZ).
